A couple of quid cheaper than normal, there is a group of 12 who wanted a whisky tasting geared towards those not particularly aufait with the lay of the land but I think folk who know their way around a bottle might like the line up too.

Blend : Master of Malt 8yo 40%
Grain : Port Dundas 21yo 31.01.1991 - 01.03.2012 278 bottles 56.8% Whiskybroker

Being a sucker for obscure whiskies I seem to have a fair stock pile. The idea was to have something curious tacked on to a regular POURS tasting as a bonus dram for discussion. However my collection grew quicker than the drinking opportunites presented themselves hence a blow out of world whiskies. 21 in total - pours will be 10ml and any popular ones can be re-sampled. A complete list will soon be posted - the computer and printer at work have imploded so the freedom of information is somewhat compromised. £18/15* a ticket. Wednesday 27th Kilderkin, Royal Mile, Edinburgh 7.30pm

From memory there will be :-

USA: Montana Roughstock, Baby Blue corn from Waco, Texas and McCarthy's from Portland Oregon

New Zealand : Lammerlaw from Wilson's distillery by Cadenheads 10yo (it's actually much older but we can only record time spent maturing in Kiwiland.

India : Amrut Herald and McDowell's single malt

Belgium : Belgian Owl

Switzerland : Swissky, Interlaken white oak sherry butt and Highland malts

Austria : J.H. Pure Malt Rye, Special Malt Rye Nougat, oat whisky Diukel whisky and Malz Diukel whisky plus another

Finland : Teerenplie

Laos : 'wisky'

Tomorrow night's line up has been finalised with the inclusion of the Hazelburn 12yo 46% 2012 release- a fair and attractive use of sherry casks on display in this bottling. A bit of a mini Campbeltown fest.

It's been a while but as a precursor to the release of the tasting program for the remainder of the year here are the details of the next Jolly Toper POURS tasting.

Thursday 7.30pm til later, £21 returning non members or £18 for members and first timers. Membership is £10 for a thirteen month period and gives £3 off each tasting.

At The Kilderkin 65/67 Canongate, Royal Mile, Edinburgh:- for me easily one of Edinburgh's better pubs, heart and soul, great beer choice- quality and diversity, nearly 100 rums, plenty whisky and staff who like working there, pub grub better than it needs to be, and groovy tunes.

There, landlord appeasing box ticked.

The main attraction for me is a Manager's Dram Oban from a single sherry cask 13yo bottled 17.11.90 at 62%. I've been doing these tastings for over ten years and nearly a complete liver so when a single malt is used which hasn't appeared before it's a bit special. These early Manager's Drams command a high price at auction and I'm not surprised.

A.D. Rattray Aberlour 20yo 46% single cask - a nice welcome dram.

G&M Imperial 1993 - 2012 43% - I love these G&M sherry casks - another topper to tope with.

That nice man Martin (son of Raymond Bladnoch Armstrong) does it again - single Islay malt 21yo 17.12.90 to 29.03.12 21yo from a first fill sherry butt at 54.5% and an out-turn of 739 bottles.

There will be something peaty but I've yet to sort that out....

Unfortunately the angels (or maybe devils) have taken a fair old share from these bottles so the usual capacity of 28 at these tastings will reduced to 24-ish.

With any luck I'll start writing up the feedback from these tastings again but don't hold one's breath.

PS I doubt there will be a raffle at the end of this tasting as I don't have enough empty miniatures to fill, hint, hint.

P/O/U/R/S TASTING 20.9.12 £20/17 EDINBURGH

Hmm,

Well the current batch of 15yo 46% Springbank is tickety-boo.

Cadenheads have recently released a rock solid 21yo Tamdhu cask strength Bourbon Hogshead

I really liked a Tullamore Dew malt that I tried at Whisky Fringe this August and have ordered one, I thought I tried the 10yo but can only get the 12yo. If the boot fits we'll wear it.

I'm off to Angus Macraid's Mulberry Bank pre-auction tasting in Glasgow tomorrow and have 10 bottles waiting to be picked up since December. As I've forgotten what they are there might be something worth including so at this stage I'll blag it and call it a mystery dram - there is another Oban Managers Dram I think, although he last one didn't despatch itself as well as I'd hoped.

That leaves something peaty and rare and over 25yo to meet my Peaty/Old/Unusual/Rare/Sherried promise (The Springbank is fairly blessed with a kiss from the cask). I somewhat over eagerly opened a Benriach 25yo Authenticus 46% but don't feel the line up is strong enough to include it. There is an easy drinking Whisky Broker 20yo Bunnahabhain, maybe a 12yo 46% Glenburgie from A. D. Rattray that is so tasty but not sure if Willy JJ can get it to me on time, likewise an astonishing Bladtub -3yo Bladnoch and a privately bottled 35yo Mortlach that tastes a bit like the Sheepdip Amoroso-Oloroso.

Quite a conundrum - maybe another 6 dram tasting.

By the way a first at the last meting, I get people to put their thumbs up if they like a dram, thumbs down if not and 'shaky hand' if undecided. To get everyone present to thumbs up is very rare and decidedly satisfying. Last week we had two 100%ers in a row! One for the new Longrow, replacing the CV and the the Springbank Society's latest release a 14yo after 7 years in port.

Thursday 04.10.12 P/O/U/R/S 7.30pm at The Kilderkin, 65/67 Canongate, Royal Mile, Edinburgh, £20/17*

Oban Manager's Dram 19yo 59.8% bottled 12/1995
The second bottle of Oban Manager's Drams I picked up at auction, this time no soapiness and not displaying sherry influence.

Tullamore Dew 12yo 40% triple distilled Irish whiskey
This really impressed me at whisky Fringe this year, now under the stewardship of Wm Grant.

Benrinnes 21yo 1983 - 2004 40% bottled for the 21st anniversary of LUVIANS Bottle Shop, Fife
The first of two Benrinnes for the night, this one from G&M with a bit of bottle aging methinks.

Benrinnes 14yo 2.9.98 - 4.9.2012 57.8% 1st fill sherry butt 298 bottles Whiskybroker
A comparison to the earlier expression this time redolent of Spanish influence.

Something peaty
Hmm, I'm hoping for a BBR Bowmore but might have to think a little harder for this one, there might be a Duthies 17yo Caol Ila 46%...
