So I take it the large majority of the world was all wrong when celebrating the beginning of the new millenium 1st January 2000?

2001 was fist first year of the decade, because there never has been a year 0.
Year 1 BC was followed directly by year 1 AD.

So we will have to wait one more year for the next decade :-)

Cheers and all the best for 2010.

Michael

It's all a bit of a silly argument, being based on a fairly arbitrary dating system. (I've tried all kinds of dating systems--none of them work.) AD/BC dating wasn't even proposed until what we now think of as the 6th century, and was gradually adopted. It supposedly dates from the birth of Christ, but scholars generally agree that the date was misfigured by several years. So if that's really of any significance to you, the real turn of the millennium was sometime around 1997. For the purposes of numerical consistency, though, a century has 100 years, and is done when the 100th year is finished. The first century would have been from the beginning of the first year, 1 AD, through the end of the hundredth year, 100 AD. The same with decades (1-10) and millennia (1-1000).

None of this will stop everyone from making their decade-end lists every ten years at the end of the ninth year of the decade. And ultimately, it doesn't really matter, unless you're a slightly unhinged A/R O/C, like me.

I agree it's all silly arguments - so can we at least agree to disagree.

I just follow the majority definition. And of course pure logic. E.g. the nineties are called the nineties because all years in that decade starts with 9. Hence the "naughties" are called that because all years in that decade starts with 0. Simple logic if you ask me.

I'm not really bothered that somebody forgot year 0, when defining the calender. In 18-something they defined the first year of the 20th century to be 1900. Hence the first year of the 21st century (and the 3rd millenium) was 2000.

Now let's pour a dram and get on with something more serious ;\)

Well, there's another thing. Nobody "forgot" the year 0. Why on earth would there be a 0th year? 1 AD was "the first year of our Lord." Likewise you (or a barrel of whisky) are not ten years (a decade) old until you have completed your tenth year.

Simple logic!

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/decade

Example 1: A decade counter. Every digit counts 0 through 9. First decade is 0 through 9, second decade 10 through 19, and so on.

Example 2: A decade resistor box. By turning selectors you set the resistance from 0 to whatever ohm you need. And the selectors go from 0 through 9 each.

If a decade starts with 1 and ends with 10 what about setting the decade resistor box to 0 ohm? How does that fit in the definition?
