My failing liver must be spreading my name around Western PA, as I got an invitation to go to a tasting on 3/31/11 with John Heffernan at a restaurant that I have never visited before.

Does any forum know of this fellow and if so, do you have any good (not too shameful) stories about the gentleman? It is always nice to slip a "loaded question" into any talk with a total stranger. ;\)

I did a web search and found out about Diageo Master of Whisky; hence my first question is answered. Now for the second loaded question, any good stories about ANY (inept) Diageo Masters of Whisky (aka salesmen).

Autism ... you surprise me, how could you consider slipping a loaded question into any conversation with some poor guy trying to earn his wages? But I see he is a Master of Whisky, so he'll be difficult to catch out.

I suppose you could ask him if he thought United Distiller's (Diageo's) decision to close Rosebank and retain Glenkinchie as their Classic Lowland Malt was based on the quality and flavour of the whisky.

PS I would love to become a Master of Whisky ... I wonder is this an academic qualification or would Diageo award one to me.
Mr Heffernan is a highly regarded speaker on Scotch whisky.

Yes. Come to think about it, the song title Masters of War by Bob Dylan seems applicable on something that keeps on popping up in many places. Returning to the subject; googling Masters of malt would keep you occupied for some time and offers a few laughs. Have not yet found any "university" where you could purchase the title though so that line of business is still open. Why not expand the Bladnoch Whisky School with a higher degree?

I've just upgraded Bladnoch Whisky school to a Whisky university. It can award me this much coveted Master of Whisky. Some people might consider 30 or 40 years working in lots of distilleries more relevant, but what do they know. Raymond

It sure looks like Diageo "awards" one to you. As they say in their job description for a "Master of Whiskey", no in-depth knowledge of whiskey needed.

wow...I am in the wrong business. I need to speak less and charge more for my events. Tell Ryta, there will be a pay increase this year.

Reminded me that when I joined the Bridge of Allan Brewery fsacebook page I was awarded the title "Master of Steffen"

Actually, Ryta can charge a fair rate and if any customer complains, she can always bring out the "Diageo talk" as an example of a grossly over-charged event.
