In a weak moment I was persuaded to offer some tastings via LivingSocial. This a scheme where businesses offer their service at a reduced rate through a voucher scheme. Today (Friday) is the third and final day the offer is available. Basically the standard ticket price of £20/17 (the lower price is for first timers or members) is reduced to £9.

I was unprepared for the popularity of the deal and have had to do some fast thinking to manage the interest so as not to offend regulars paying full fare sitting next to someone who is effectively attending at half price. My damage limitation effort will hopefully see most everyone happy.

I don't traditionally advertise as I don't believe it works so this will hopefully help swell my pool of regulars- I've already indirectly been rewarded with a couple of jobs so I'm happy.

So if you want to try the tasting on the cheap or you know them and fancy a bit of a bargain best have a look at their website...

As always my website has the details- most importantly the dates and tasting descriptions. http://www.jollytopertastings.co.uk

Just to confirm the line up is as said (that might sound redundant but I was a bit unsure of proceedings) and also there will be £5 off any bottle featured when purchased in Cadenheads Whisky Shop, sorry to sound tricky but this is 'subject to availabilty': i.e. nobody has the cask strength peated and nobody is yet to stock the mystery dram.

Here are some dashed-off notes from the Amrut tasting:-

From (hazy) memory:-

We started with the current 46%, most were impressed while some complained of off notes although no serious problems, one person struggled to find a true character. For me this was a classic Amrut easily up to snuff.

To compare the with the first dram the second (mystery) dram was a bottle from batch two when the brand was first released, 40% and artificially coloured, interestingly a few preferred this to the current standard, most found it less confident and not too soundly structured.

Next we had Two Continents batch 2 50%, part matured in India, maturation completed in Europe. For my money an excellent version and my favourite Amrut to date. Very easy drinking, plenty distillery character but nicely subtle compared to the usual big swagger. Whisky Advocate magazine's very recently warded this their World whisky of the year, seconded

Next was the cask strength edition - so back to the bolder style, we've tried this one before to mostly great effect, the high strength goes a long was and it went down pretty well.

Fusion followed this - 25% peated Scottish barley, 75% unpeated Indian barley. A marvellous effect with complexity way beyond it's years although multilply time by four when comparing Scottish and Indian maturation periods. Jim Murray's 3rd best whisky 2010, a winner with the Malt Maniacs too, not arguments from me.

Finally the now off-market cask strength peated expression: a real winner, very classy and eminantly peated, why should we expect poor quality from Indian malt? Most 'whisky' made in India is molasses based but this is the real deal. A classic.

I'll post the full results of the attendee's feed-back opinions once I've compiled the report, I expect some less than flattering comments as I was surprised at the level of dis-satisfaction and lack of people being impressed although the opinion was generally split between the converts and sceptics.

Thanks Ashok

I've been a bit generous with the budget for the the next tasting, if you're coming (Yogi, I'm looking forward to the chocolate, no pressure) try not to read the line-up.

Thursday 23rd Feb. Tolbooth Tavern, Royal Mile, Edinburgh, £21/18* (*£3 discount for first timers) phone 0131 556 5864 for tickets - Mon. to Sat. 10.30 to 5.30.

Lagavulin Jazz festival botling 1993 - 2011 Bodega sherry cask 55.4% - 'magnificent' according to Dave Broom. Enough said.

Springbank Rundlets and Kilderkins 10yo 49.4% from 68 litre casks, I hear talk that Springbank lost it's way sometime back however the quality of some recent releases should give the critics food for thought. Okay the stuff coming out up to the ninties was generaly of a very high quality and comparison to the present style is difficult but the evidence here is the distillery has sort of re-invented itself.

Glenfarclas 175th Anniversary 43%, this distillery has little to prove, mind you I was dissappointed by a recent 21yo- the 15yo seemed easily superior. Here the commemorative bottling is just what it should be: a testimony to the style and quality this independant represents. I'd heard good things about this bottling, they were true.

House of Sturat 12yo 43% blend from the 1970/80s, if my plan works there will be more of these time travelling drams, fingers crossed for my bids at McTears today (hopefully they will be sealed bottles!). That pretty much unanswerable question again- did these long-in-bottle blends taste this good when they were created or has there been aging in the glass?

Glen Deveron 15yo 43%, anybody else tried this? there are some distilleries it is easy to write off as also rans so it's nice to come across a bottling of this quality from a distillery that has never been high profile.

Finally the return of the Mystery Dram, what fun, thanks to regular Bruce (I'm talking about his frequency at these tastings not the nature of his bowels)
